Healthy Starts for Infants & Toddlers
Healthy Starts for Infants and Toddlers: Shape NC is an initiative implemented by the NC Partnership for Children to promote healthy eating and active learning through play with children ages birth to 35 months. The initiative is supported by NC DHHS: Division of Child Development and Early Education.
The Natural Learning Initiative (NLI) offered expertise in evidence-based outdoor learning environments design and management. NLI conducted the following activities: design assistance, technical support, training and professional development, and created resources to support the incremental development of high-quality outdoor environments for infants and toddlers in 19 childcare centers in Wake, Orange, and Guilford counties.
The Preventing Obesity by Design (POD) strategy was used to support the development of high-quality, developmentally appropriate, outdoor learning environments. POD best practices were used to create schematic designs that encourage infants and toddlers’ active living, healthy eating, and outdoor learning.
