The Butterfly Buddies Explore Outdoors

Join the Butterfly Buddies as they discover the magic of naturalized play! A new children’s book is helping South Carolina early childhood educators and families see why. The resource was developed by the Natural Learning Initiative (NLI) at NC State University for Grow Outdoors SC a collaborative effort between the SC Department of Social Services and the SC Department of Public Health. The story follows four friends through a day of outdoor discovery. From racing trikes on looping pathways to whipping up “treats” in a mud kitchen, the “Butterfly Buddies” highlight how naturalized spaces foster physical activity and healthy habits in our youngest learners.

A two-page spread from the book shows children playing with activity settings like a looping primary concrete pathway and natural grass maze.

The book serves as a vibrant visual guide for parents and caregivers, showcasing the Preventing Obesity by Design (POD) model. Each page features simple, engaging rhymes that transform complex educational concepts into relatable moments of playful learning and imagination, such as Daniel making “pies” in the mud kitchen or children creating rhythms at a music wall. By illustrating children interacting with native shrubs, ferns, and water features, the narrative helps childcare providers visualize the benefits of replacing traditional playgrounds with lush, biophilic learning environments.

Included as appendices are at-home family activities to extend nature-based learning.

The journey continues at home with nature-inspired activities designed to foster ecological stewardship. From “Ana’s Leaf Rubbing” to “Sammy’s Insect Observation,” the book includes practical steps for families to explore the outdoors together, such as family picknicks and backyard obstacle courses. While over 700 copies have been delivered to Grow Outdoors SC in Columbia, SC for distribution to childcare centers, those interested in the project are encouraged to reach out!
