A Safe Place, located in eastern Raleigh, NC, enlarged their previously compact OLE by moving several fence lines, nearly doubling their play space, as a result of participating in the POD Wake Co program. A new double looped concrete pathway winds around the space, connecting the new learning garden, mud play area, picnic space, and outdoor classroom. Tire planters and planting beds line the pathway, which are filled with perennial plants and grasses all within reach of the children. The children enjoy planting, tending to, and harvesting the vegetables, which are used in snacks and meals at the center. Four fruit trees and 158 square feet of fruiting shrubs were planted and an arbor was constructed for grow flowering vines, as well as to provide pockets of shady seating along the pathway. A Safe Place was the recipient of a City of Raleigh Urban Agriculture Award in 2015 and invested $16,550 on the OLE improvements during the course of the POD Wake project.
